In the Mtendeli camp in Tanzania, Burundian refugees who work as teachers find themselves in difficult conditions. In addition to the poverty they face, they are mistreated by those responsible for education in the camp.

Burundian teachers in Mtendeli camp say they are facing major challenges mainly related to poor coordination by Burundian officials who threaten their interests in order to satisfy the Tanzanian staff who control the education sector.

Teachers also complain about their meagre salaries, as they work in a double shift system, especially for those who teach in secondary school. The hard work they do does not allow them to take educational leave.

Besides the small salary they receive, these teachers also face other difficulties, including the lack of textbooks in their daily work. “The challenges are huge. We are not given a salary, it’s just an insignificant incentive. We are told that a refugee teacher should be treated as such.  We also have a problem with teaching materials, the performance courses no longer exist.” They point out.

Burundian teachers in the Mtendeli camp in Tanzania are asking education organizations to provide them with sufficient textbooks and to increase their salaries.
